Derrion Albert

According to the Chicago Sun Times and CNN, Derrion Albert, a 16-year old honor student at Christian Fenger Academy High School in Chicago, Illinois was savagely murdered by three Chicago teens last Thursday, while tens of dozens of people were present and one unnamed person even videotapped the incident.

Three teenagers have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 16-year-old boy whose beating was captured on amateur video. Nineteen-year-old Silvanus Shannon, 16-year-old Eric Carson and 18-year-old Eugene Riley were charged as adults with first degree felony murder, said Tandra Simonton, spokesperson for the Cook County States Attorney. They were all held without bond. They are charged in the death of Derrion Albert, an honors student who was beaten to death last Thursday. An amateur videotape of the beating has been broadcast nationally.

The incident was not gang related but arose from a disagreement between students who live in Altgeld Gardens and another group who live in an area known as the “Ville,” according to assistant Cook County state’s attorney Jodi Peterson.

It was a brutal and violent attack in which the victim was merely a bystander,” Peterson said. Earlier Thursday morning, the fight between the two factions led to a shooting outside the school, Peterson said. That led to a brawl near the school after classes finished shortly before 3 p.m., Peterson said.

Derrion had been standing near the fighting at 343 W. 111th Street when Carson and an unknown offender from the “Ville” approached him, Peterson said. Carson struck Derrion in the head with a long wooden railroad tie and the unknown offender punched him in the face, knocking Derrion unconscious, Peterson said.

When Derrion gained consciousness, he moved a few feet away from the mob and tried getting up. But he was attacked again. Soon, a group of five from the Altgeld Gardens faction descended upon Derrion. He was struck again with a railroad tied wielded by Riley as Shannon stomped on his head repeatedly, Peterson said.

The video, shot by a witness, allegedly shows all three striking, punching and stomping Derrion in the head. It's unclear who shot the footage, but a local television station that received the tape turned it over to police. The tape shows attackers wielding two-by-four wooden planks and punching and kicking a single person. At one point, four or five males are seen beating and stomping the same young man after he falls to the ground.

As the attackers run away, the person with the camera and several others approached Albert and carried him into a nearby building. "Derrion, get up!" a female voice pleads. On Monday, family and friends, some wearing shirts bearing Albert's photo, held a vigil in his honor.

Albert's grandfather, Joseph Walker, told CNN affiliate WLS-TV that his grandson was a good kid who didn't deserve to die. "He was in bible class this Tuesday night. Church on Sunday," Walker told WLS-TV. "I have no trouble out of my grandson whatsoever. This thing that happened to him is so horrific that we just don't know what we're going to do. We lost a really dear friend in my grandson. He was a blessed child."

Walker said the family was struggling to come to terms with why Albert was killed. "I don't know where all this anger come from these people today," he told WLS-TV. "That's just too much anger for someone to have in their heart. All I can do is I'm going to pray for these people, I'm going to pray for forgiveness."

Albert's aunt, Rose Braxton, told CNN affiliate WGN-TV that the family was even more hurt that a memorial in Albert's honor was burned down. "To go and burn a memorial after such tragedy, then that just speaks for itself to what kind of people they are," she told WGN-TV.

Family and friends asked the community to turn in anyone they knew who was a part of Albert's beating. "What kind of person, what kind of individual, has such rage and such anger and such madness?" the Rev. Michael Pfleger said. "We've got to get to the hearts of our children, because nothing, nothing, excuses or justifies the actions of an individual who would beat another individual. Nothing justifies that in this society. "Pfleger said it was time to make a change, so children aren't afraid to go to or from school. He said this kind of teen violence was not just an issue for Chicago, but from "Oakland to Newark." Ron Huberman, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, said he had met with Albert's classmates. "How do we make sure this event doesn't become another event?" he said. "Another vigil on another day." he said.

Eugene Riley, 18, (left) and Silvonus Shannon, 19, are among three teens charged in the fatal beating of Fenger High School student Derrion Albert, 16. Eric Carson, 16, also was charged in the beating.

Shannon, a Fenger student, and Riley both gave videotaped confessions to their roles in the beating, Peterson said. Shannon has a job as a landscaper. Riley, a high school graduate, works part time at a health care facility and auto repair shop. The pair do not have criminal backgrounds. Carson, a Fenger junior, is currently serving a two-year probation for a July 2008 robbery.

Below is the graphic and disturbing video of Derrion Albert's murder.

This whole incident saddens me to the point of tears. I can be honest with you guys when I say that after reading the articles and viewing the video last night, I cried for several minutes.

My tears were from:
1. frustration at the senseless acts of violence displayed in the video by young African-American teens killing another young African-American teen;

2. knowing that Derrion Albert was a young man with what appeared to be a bright future and that his possibilities have ended and;

3. reading that Derrion was an innocent bystander trying to do the right thing by stopping the teens from attacking a fellow student, and not only is he dead because of it, but so many people watched as the teens repeatedly and savagely beat Derrion with a two-by-four, stomped; and punched -- someone even videotapped the incident, but NO ONE intervened until it was too late.

Rest in peace Derrion Albert. Your death will not be in vain!

In related news MC Nas (who I absolutely adore), has written an open letter regarding the Derrion Albert incident.

Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong wars! Killing each other is definitely played out. Being hurt from the lost of a love one was never cool. Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong war! I know that feeling , that frustration with life and needing to take it out on someone, any one. But….

We chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for. I remember seeing deaths over 8 ball jackets, fila’s , and name plate chains. Deaths over “he say she say”!!!!! “I’m from This block or I’m from that block”, or “my moms n pops is f*cked up now the whole world gotta pay”!!!
I remember feeling like I was the hardest “n*gga” breathin. And I couldn’t wait to prove it. But let’s think. What r we really proving?? And proving what to who?? Everybody knows Chicago breeds the strongest of the strong but I just feel, me, being ya brother from another state feels your pain as if I grew up with you in ya very own household.
You have the ability and mind power to change they way we are looked at. Look who’s watching us young warriors, look who’s throwin us in jail constantly, look at the ignorance in the world. Look at the racist dogs who love to see us down. Lovin to bury us in the ground or in jail were we continue this worthless war on one another. Young warriors…. We are WASTING more and more time. We gotta get on our jobs and take over the world. Cuz This movie left the theaters years ago, Juice, Menace, boys n the hood , blood n blood out, Belly!

When we see each other why do we see hatred? Why were we born in a storm, born soldiers, WARRIORS….and instead of building each other up we are at war with each other.. May the soul of this young person find peace with the almighty. I’m with you young warriors. You’re me and I’m you. But trust me! you are fighting the wrong war.

According to Huffington Post,

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Governor, David Paterson thrived politically as a state senator, working his way up in a nearly all-white Albany political structure. Now, he's governor, and things have never been worse.

For nearly a year, Paterson, the state's first black governor, has been battered by a faltering economy and with poll numbers hovering at record lows. This week, he learned President Barack Obama's administration is worried he'll drag other Democrats down in 2010 if he runs for a full term, perhaps even threatening the narrow margin the party needs to ward off filibusters in the U.S. Senate.
These days, Paterson finds himself very much alone. Paterson said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Obama never directly asked him to step aside, and he wouldn't discuss what presidential aides may have told him confidentially. But the legally blind governor added he's heard the message from Democrats in New York and Washington: "I'm blind, I'm not oblivious. But I am running for governor," he said. "I don't think I am a drag on the party. I think I'm fighting for the priorities of my party."

At an Associated Press event in Syracuse last week, Paterson said that when he was Gov. Eliot Spitzer's lieutenant governor, he had never envisioned becoming the state's chief executive." I had this grand plan that Hillary Clinton was going to become president," he said. "Maybe the governor would appoint me to the Senate."

In January 2008, that was the plan. Paterson worked to draw black voters to Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. On TV screens and front pages, he was wedged next to President Bill Clinton and closer to the senator than Chelsea. Democrats thought it was a well-deserved fit for Paterson as a reward for bringing the party close to controlling the state Senate for the first time in decades. Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch said Paterson was capable, highly intelligent and courageous. Paterson was the dashing statesman in an otherwise plodding Albany. He was smart, collegial, a reformer, ambitious and funny – on purpose.

Now, for many, he's a punch line. Even Paterson is starting to talk about exit scenarios. "I don't think anyone who is clearly hurting their party would take an action like running when it is going to make the party lose," he said. Then he added a shot: "I'm not sure those that are always calling for loyalty in the Democratic Party have been loyal themselves." PREACH, PREACHER!!!
Albany's top two legislative Democrats – Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Conference Leader John Sampson – last week committed to Paterson "right now" and "until otherwise known." Another Democratic pal, Rep. Gregory Meeks of Queens, called Paterson "my governor, my friend, who has done a relatively good job." For a sitting governor, that praise is a few shades shy of faint.
All of this comes days after Washington Democrats sent a clear message that Paterson should step aside for the popular Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. They are concerned that a weak top of the ticket could hurt other Democrats, including Kirsten Gillibrand, whom Paterson appointed to fill Clinton's Senate seat. A Paterson run could even entice Republican savior-in-waiting Rudy Giuliani to run for governor. "He needs a game-changer," said Lee Miringoff of the Marist College (WHO ARE YOU AGAIN? IT AIN'T GALLOP!) poll, which found Paterson had a 17 percent approval rating.

Many, however, say the game is over. Last week's criticism and an apparent snub by Obama who gushed over Cuomo during a New York visit was embarrassing publicly for Paterson. Worse, it may be lethal financially, giving Democratic campaign contributors cover to cut checks to Cuomo and, with the apparent blessing of the nation's first black president, not worry about a backlash. That will make Paterson's decision for him. It was the same force that made Cuomo exit the 2002 race for governor as money and support flowed to then-state Comptroller Carl McCall in his losing campaign to unseat Gov. George Pataki.
Without friends, a free flow of campaign cash and the contacts made from a previous campaign for governor, Paterson is mostly alone. Inheriting the job 18 months ago when Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution probe and governing through the worst fiscal crisis in state history left him saying "no" to powerful, well-funded special interests, while repeatedly committing his own political missteps, including the ugly process to replace Clinton with Gillibrand. Paterson angered the Kennedy family when he didn't embrace Caroline Kennedy for the job and a Paterson operative later leaked unsubstantiated rumors about her in an attempt to show she was ill suited.

He is left with a message that is not much more than his character – which polls show NEW YORKERS LIKEand how he feels he kept the state from worse fiscal fates faced by other states. So Paterson says he's "clearly running" even as Democrats urge him to reconsider. "You don't give up because you have low poll numbers," he told "Meet the Press." "If everybody can tell what the future is, why didn't they tell me I'd be governor? I could have used the heads-up."

The political game is worse than the crack game! I read this article twice, and NOT once did I read anyone comment that Gov. Paterson was doing a bad job.

In fact, all signs from the article--save for poll conducted by Marist College that found that Gov. Paterson had an approval rating of 17%, support the notion that Paterson is doing a good job as Governor of New York.

Gov. Paterson's:

1) Character polls shows NEW YORKERS LIKE him; and
2) He has kept the state of New York from the worse fiscal fates faced by other states (can anyone say Detroit, Michigan  and California).

In my opinion, those are pertinent reasons when deciding whether Gov. Paterson should run again, NOT these high school theatrics of I like this person more because he's cool (Andrew Cuomo) or you didn't pick my friend to be Senator (Caroline Kennedy), so you've got's go!

Below is the full interview of Gov. Paterson from Meet the Press this past Sunday.

According to CNN, Oscar winning director Roman Polanski was nabbed by Swiss police today (September 27), on charges stemming from a 1978 sexual assault case in California, were the director was alleged to have drugged and raped a 13-year-old child

Polanski pled guilty in 1977 to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, acknowledging he had sex with a 13-year-old girl. However Polanski fled the United States before he could be sentenced, and U.S. authorities have had a warrant for his arrest since 1978.

Polanski was attempting to enter Switzerland to attend the Zurich Film Festival, where a tribute was to take place in his honor.

(CNN) -- Oscar-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski has been arrested in Switzerland on a decades-old arrest warrant stemming from a sex charge in California, Swiss police said Sunday. Polanski, 76, was taken into custody trying to enter Switzerland on Saturday, Zurich police said. A spokesman for the Swiss Justice Ministry said Polanski was arrested upon arrival at the airport.

He has lived in France for decades to avoid being arrested if he enters the United States and declined to appear in person to collect his Academy Award for Best Director for "The Pianist" in 2003. The director pleaded guilty in 1977 to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, acknowledging he had sex with a 13-year-old girl. But he fled the United States before he could be sentenced, and U.S. authorities have had a warrant for his arrest since 1978.

Polanski was nominated for best director Oscars for "Tess" and "Chinatown," and for best writing for "Rosemary's Baby," which he also directed. He was en route to the Zurich Film Festival, which is holding a Polanski tribute this year, when he was arrested by Swiss authorities, the festival said. A provisional arrest warrant was issued last week out of Los Angeles, California, after authorities learned Polanski was going to be in Switzerland, Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, told CNN on Sunday.

There have been repeated attempts to settle the case over the years, but the sticking point has always been Polanski's refusal to return to attend hearings. Prosecutors have consistently argued that it would be a miscarriage of justice to allow a man to go free who "drugged and raped a 13-year-old child." The Swiss Justice Ministry said Polanski was put "in provisional detention." But whether he can be extradited to the United States "can be established only after the extradition process judicially has been finalised," a ministry spokesman said in an e-mail.

"It is possible to appeal at the federal penal court of justice against an arrest warrant in view to extradition as well as against an extradition decision," the spokesman wrote. "Their decisions can be taken further to the federal court of justice."

Gibbons said the extradition process will be determined in Switzerland, but said authorities are ready to move forward with Polanski's sentencing process, depending on what happens in Zurich. Polanski was accused of plying a 13-year-old girl with champagne and a sliver of a quaalude tablet and performing various sex acts, including intercourse, with her during a photo shoot at actor Jack Nicholson's house. He was 43 at the time.

Nicholson was not at home, but his girlfriend at the time, actress Anjelica Huston, was. According to a probation report contained in the filing, Huston described the victim as "sullen." "She appeared to be one of those kind of little chicks between -- could be any age up to 25. She did not look like a 13-year-old scared little thing," Huston said. She added that Polanski did not strike her as the type of man who would force himself on a young girl. "I don't think he's a bad man," she said in the report. "I think he's an unhappy man."

Polanski pleaded guilty to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. There have been repeated attempts to settle the case over the years, but the sticking point has always been Polanski's refusal to return to attend hearings. Prosecutors have consistently argued that it would be a miscarriage of justice to allow a man to go free who "drugged and raped a 13-year-old child."

Polanski's lawyers tried earlier this year to have the charges thrown out, but a Los Angeles judge rejected the request. In doing so, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza left the door open to reconsider his ruling if Polanski shows up in court. Espinoza also appeared to acknowledge problems with the way Polanski's case was handled years ago.

According to court documents, Polanski, his lawyer and the prosecutor thought they'd worked out a deal that would spare Polanski from prison and let the young victim avoid a public trial. But the original judge in the case, who is now dead, first sent the director to maximum-security prison for 42 days while he underwent psychological testing. Then, on the eve of his sentencing, the judge told attorneys he was inclined to send Polanski back to prison for another 48 days.

Polanski fled the United States for France, where he was born. In the February hearing, Espinoza mentioned a documentary film that depicts backroom deals between prosecutors and a media-obsessed judge who was worried his public image would suffer if he didn't send Polanski to prison. "It's hard to contest some of the behavior in the documentary was misconduct," said Espinoza. But he declined to dismiss the case entirely

Samantha Geimer, Polanski's 13-year old victim

Legal experts said such a ruling would have been extremely rare. Polanski's victim is among those calling for the case to be tossed out. Samantha Geimer filed court papers in January saying, "I am no longer a 13-year-old child. I have dealt with the difficulties of being a victim, have surmounted and surpassed them with one exception. "Every time this case is brought to the attention of the Court, great focus is made of me, my family, my mother and others. That attention is not pleasant to experience and is not worth maintaining over some irrelevant legal nicety, the continuation of the case."

Geimer, now 45, married and a mother of three, sued Polanski and received an undisclosed settlement. She long ago came forward and made her identity public -- mainly, she said, because she was disturbed by how the criminal case had been handled.

Following Espinoza's ruling earlier this year, Geimer's lawyer, Larry Silver, said he was disappointed and that Espinoza "did not get to the merits and consider the clear proof of both judicial and prosecutorial corruption."He argued in court that had "Mr. Polanski been treated fairly" his client would not still be suffering because of publicity almost 32 years after the crime.

Polanski and his late wife, actress Sharon Tate

Polanski's arrest Saturday came two days after one of his wife's killers died. The director's pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, and four others were butchered by members of the Manson "family" in August 1969. Polanski was filming in Europe at the time. By her own admission, Susan Atkins held the eight-months-pregnant Tate down as she pleaded for mercy, stabbing the 26-year-old actress 16 times.
I would have LOVED to see the look on Polanski's face when the Swiss police placed him in custody. Great director or not, this man is VERY SICK! Some supporters of Polanski may say he had a momentarily lapse of insanity due to his 8-month pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate being savagely murdered by Manson and his followers, but wrong is STILL wrong!

I mean come on Polanski you couldn't tell that she was underage? More importantly, Angelica cut the BULL SH*T with the "[sh]e appeared to be one of those kind of little chicks between -- could be any age up to 25. She did not look like a 13-year-old scared little thing," Geimer was DRUGGED!

If Geimer looked anything remotely close to the younger picture of her above, during the time of the alleged sexual assault, EVERYONE aware of Geimer's presence in that house the day of the incident should be LOCKED UP UNDER THE JAIL!

This past Wednesday, the VH1 Hip Hop Honors took place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. Actor/comedienne Tracy Morgan hosted the ceremony for the third consecutive time.

This year's Hip Hop Honors as we previously mentioned http://thechickfix.blogspot.com/2009/09/vh1-hip-hop-honors-why-wont-u-ll-cool-j.html celebrated Def Jam’s 25th anniversary and focused on the label’s founders, Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin.

The show also highlighted some of the influential people behind Def-Jam’s legacy such as: Lyor Cohen (aka lil BIG sexy), Kevin Liles (B-more’s finest), Julie GreenwaldAntonio “L.A.” Reid, and Jay-Z.

Check out some flicks below:

Foxyboogie...the execution of your outfit almost worked but those hideous I-don't-work-at-MAC-but-I-should-cause-I-got-a-trunk-full-of-their stuff eyelashes and your necklace is doin' da most and therefore the whole outfit = FAIL! Love the makeup sans the lashes.
Ashanti-boo...we're not convinced. I actually like you girl, but you're always a day late and a dollar short with your fits. Your outfit just reeks of trying too hard and two seasons too late with the edgy trend (even if you are wearing this seasons black laced up Louis Vuitton boots).
Chrisette hun...this outfit is not the business! It's too busy and the clothes literally swallow your frame. I think you should have worn the outfit you wore to the after party (picture is coming) on the red carpet.
E-V-E your outfit is just ok (nothing too crazy and very safe). However, what I'm not feeling is your hair. Sorry!
Free...girl now you know we use to be thick as thieves (in my head of course) when you and AJ hosted BET's 106 & Park. I'm not sure where to start regarding your ENTIRE look. You're too cute for this...get it TOGEVA ASAP!!! By the way, is it me or does Free look like a grown up version of Kendu's (MJB's husband/manager) daughter Briana (http://yazmar.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/mjb6.jpg), who earlier this year ROCKED her then boyfriend, rapper Charles Hamilton's jaw when he freestyled about her having an abortion.
I use to have the BIGGEST crush on Dark Man X (DMX) from the time his first song with Faith Evans came out until I learned he on was on dem thangs...and hold up, hold up, this is NOT your wife Tashera...ohhhh I'm telling!
Fabolous...LOVE the sweatshirt!
Public Enemy...it's at the point that if Flav looked normal then people would start worrying...*yelling* Flava-Flav!!! Sorry I couldn't resist.
Chris Rizzy (Rock) was in the building. I don't know why, but no matter how many diverse characters Chris plays, he will always be Pookie from New Jack City to me.
Eric Sermon...wonder if we'll ever know the truth about that jumping out of the window incident.
Ludacris has been looking good ever since he cut those braids off...I see you baby!
Ghostface...*singing* "all that I got is youuuuu, babe, and I'm so grateful we made it through..." That is/was my jam!
Uncle Russell (Simmons)...question: How is it you wear sneakers and street gear to every major event including your wedding to Kimora Lee, but tonight for the first time since I've been living you got on a suit?
The Roots...their so deep both figuratively and literally and I LOVE IT!
Trey Songs is such a cutie, but I'm completely turned all the way OFF by him ever since I read that Honey magazine article where he talked about his sex life. Now every time I see him he just comes off as sleazy-mcsleaze. I don't think any self respecting woman finds a man who has slept with sooooo many women and dishes about it, appealing...just my thoughts man...just what I was feeling at the time...Jay-Z).
D.C.'s own WALE (that's my name don't forget, it's not a game, hold your dame, cause my thang something vicious)!
M-E-T-HOD Man! Excuse me Meth, but exactly who are you throwing up the middle finger to? I'm mean seriously this was an award show red carpet, were there j.o.s.e.rs ((c) Fat Joe) on the red carpet? TAKE SEAT STAT!!!
Kid Rock
Tracy Morgan...boy now you know you wrong on so MANY levels...still love you though..."pick up the pieces...gotta pick up the pieces..."

Kevin Liles(B-More's finest)...every time I see him I can't help but think of when Dame screamed on/punked him on the Backstage documentary movie. I think the thing that most disturbed me was that Kevin was in some sense of the word Dame's boss at the time.

Check back in an hour and half or so and I'll have some performance flicks from the show...and they won't disappoint...(EIGHT WORDS...Officer Ross looking like a THICK 80's WANKSTA) have to go run an errand...I do have thangs (yes I said thangs) to do besides the blog...smooches!
